Walking Market, Chiang Mai.

Walking Market, Chiang Mai.

Sure, there are great shopping opportunities all over Thailand, but for handicrafts and unique gifts, save your money for Chiang Mai. Aside from the markets, shopping centers, boutiques, and gallery-style shops, the northern city is also surrounded by a number of factories and workshops, where you can watch your items being made before you buy. It’s a lot to take in, even for the most avid of shopaholics, so here’s our guide to get the best shopping experience in Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai Night Bazaar

Situated in the heart of town, the Chiang Mai Night Bazaar is a popular but relatively relaxed affair where you’ll find everything from jewelry and clothes to art and furniture. No trip to Chiang Mai is complete without a visit here.

Sunday Walking Market

There’s a Saturday Walking Market too, but if you have the choice, opt for the Sunday one. Open from late afternoon until midnight, this is a huge market with a fantastic atmosphere where a multitude of colorful stalls offer all kinds of clothing, souvenirs, and local crafts.

Warorot Market

For a local shopping experience, head to Warorot Market. While other items are sold here, it’s the food that’s the star attraction. Spread across three floors, one of the levels act as giant kitchen, filling the air with delicious aromas as fresh dishes are created before your very eyes.

Central Airport Plaza

There are a number of shopping malls in Chiang Mai, but Central Airport Plaza is located within walking distance of the airport, so you won’t have to carry your purchases too far if leaving Chiang Mai. It’s also good for real quality souvenirs, with a section dedicated to handicrafts, art, and textiles.

Charoenrat Road

Some of the best art and handicraft stores in Chiang Mai are located along Charoenrat Road. Try La Luna for modern Asian art and ceramics and Vila Cini for beautiful hand-loomed silks. Also be sure to check out Moei Arts, where the handmade crafts and ceramics help sustain the Karen hilltribes.
